What specific experiences (honors or otherwise) in the past year have had the most impact on your academic and professional goals and trajectory? Articulate specific academic and/or professional goals for the next year.
As I look back on this year, it feels like it happened in an instant, but at the same time, I feel like I am looking back many years jam packed into one. This year was filled with happiness, joy, anxiety, stress, friendships, and many many many tears. Since August, I served as a coordinator at a nonprofit, got a dog, made incredible friends, got robbed, planned my sister's wedding, got sick with COVID-19, and was given the opportunity to be the co-director of Camp Kesem at the University of Cincinnati. I learned about the wicked problems that surround the honeybee populations, and what we each can do to help the species survive at the 1819 Innovation Hub. Since then, my Dad has grown his beehives from two to SIX! I had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy, through UC and the Honors Program, but unfortunately that got cancelled. I was able to learn about the country and travel during the school year and will take that knowledge with me in my future travels. I created an amazing schedule of a week full of FUN for kids whose parents are impacted by cancer. I looked at it big picture, small picture, details, and with a magnifying glass inside and out. Even though that week of fun will never come to life, I will take every piece of making that schedule with me into my future endeavors as a leader. It wasn’t for nothing. I grew and learned as a leader, student, global citizen, and as a human.
But most of all, the most impactful change for my future trajectory was becoming co-director of Camp Kesem for the 2020-2021 academic school year. As a pair, my co-director and I will be responsible for representing CKUC at all in person and virtual events, we will lead weekly meetings with coordinators, and recruit/manage 11+ coordinators to achieve chapter goals. I have been a part of Camp Kesem for 3 years, have been on the coordinating board for 2, and will be the co-director for my 4th and final year of my undergraduate journey. I never dreamed of following a career in philanthropy…. As my time with Camp Kesem progresses, my heart continues to grow for the organization. I am beginning to feel the end of my time with Kesem coming and it terrifies me and makes me very sad. I shared these feelings with my Regional Director and she proposed the idea of continuing my journey with Kesem into my professional career. I am currently researching and developing my plans and aspirations in the world of Camp Kesem National after graduation. It wasn’t what I had planned for myself, and it honestly came out of nowhere, but aren’t the best paths the ones you don’t even realize you’re on?
My goal for the final year of my undergraduate journey, is to prepare myself mentally, physically, and academically to step into my career as a well rounded, educated, and caring adult. With all my experiences through the University Honors Program, I can take my place as a Global Citizen Scholar into the world.
